I don't know where the other reviewers are coming from with their claims of "hideous" and "destructive." I have used audio software on many 78s and admittedly each disc is a judgment call. The goal is to reduce the noise short of distorting the music, and sometimes there are trade-offs. I'd like to hear these discs "unrestored" to see what Mr. Varney had to work with. Yes, at times there is a tad of over-processing but not enough to justify the criticisms here. An overall fine job.

I have heard some atrocious transfers in my day, but nothing so bad to so great an artist in all my life.

regarding the Beethoven #6...before it is not too late...would it be possible to get all the archive uploads of pre 1970 recorded music WITHOUT THE DESTRUCTIVE FORCE of NOISE REDUCTION...with modern techniques on the way to reset
the oldies amplitude, you will find that any natural vinyl noise will not overcome the music using these modern techniques...the noise overcoming the sound only happens under the stupid remaster of those classic gems...an example of modern techniques in action;

I didn't notice any distortion in my playing of this one. Seems to be a fine transfer from the original 78rpm. Nice to know Toscanini recordings are being saved.

Subject: Toscanini--superb; recording--distorted
Toscanini is the conductor against whom I weigh all other conductors--and find them wanting. This recording has excellent Toscanini--and entirely unacceptable distortion. I spent years listening to 78 rpm records, even with acoustic phonographs, and never heard such distortion. I'm suspicious of the deathly silence when the music pauses or is quiet; evidently the typical 78 rpm hiss and pops have been filtered out. Severe filtering could certainly introduce distortion. I wish that I could hear the transcription before being filtered. Or maybe the record player used the 1-mil LP needle instead of the 3-mil 78 rpm needle. Or the needle needed replacing. I'd greatly prefer listening to Toscanini on an acoustic phonograph than with this digital distortion. I think that a microphone placed in front of an acoustic-phonograph horn would produce better quality. Hiss and pops I can take, but not distortion.

I'd never have believed that this was taken from 78s. For a recording from the 1930s the quality is great. Well done for the transcription and restoration.
